Lannan Lecturer Calls for 'Truth'

Self-proclaimed freedom fighter Cornel West used the example of Socrates on Wednesday to show how bold speech can lead to a loss of popularity.

While in Santa Fe for an appearance at the Lensic Performing Arts Center, West said college professors and most media outlets are afraid to speak the truth, and Americans are afraid to speak out against U.S. policies for fear of drawing an anti-Semitism label.

Yet he challenged the audience to practice parrhesia, a Greek terms meaning plain or bold speech.
