QUESTA -- The federal agency responsible for evaluating public health issues related to Molycorp's molybdenum mine near here decided Wednesday to trash its initial health assessment and start over.

The Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry -- part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the agency responsible for evaluating health impacts at sites under consideration for Superfund cleanup -- issued its first draft of a public health assessment Sept. 24, but failed to hold a public meeting seeking community input by the time the comment period ended May 16.

"We hope we can start over and make it right this time," Lisa Hayes, a senior environmental scientists with ATSDR, told a roomful of people from Questa, including Molycorp representatives and mine workers. …
