Homes Evacuated After Blaze Breaks Out Near I-40

A wind-driven fire charred more than 600 acres of bosque in Albuquerque as of 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, threatening several subdivisions and shutting down Interstate 40 over the Rio Grande during evening rush hour.

Police asked 600 to 700 people on the West Side to evacuate their homes shortly after the fire broke out about 3 p.m. near I-40 and the river. About 40 children and teenagers were evacuated from a basketball camp at St. Pius X High School.

Evacuated residents were asked to go to the Sheraton Old Town, St. Joseph on the Rio Grande Church or to a shopping center near I-40 and Coors Boulevard. …
