Plan Devised For West States

New Mexico will clear the air over national parks and wilderness areas by using a market-based approach developed specifically for Western states.

The Environment Department decided this week in favor of the Western option to meet federal haze reduction requirements. That option allows industry more flexibility and will produce results sooner than the national approach.

The impacts of the new rule will be felt beyond industry. A ban on home trash burning and new limits on agricultural burning are likely, said department Air Quality Bureau Chief Sandra Ely.

The ultimate goal is to eliminate manmade haze -- created by smoke, dust, moisture and vapor suspended in air -- at nine key scenic areas in New Mexico and 147 others around the West by 2064. …
