Upheaval at Lab Cuts Into Business

Los Alamos National Laboratory spent about $620 million in goods and services in New Mexico last year, but this year the laboratory's procurement process has been thrown into upheaval, scrutinized by Congress and criticized by the media.

As LANL has moved to repair and revamp outdated business practices, many New Mexico companies that supply the lab are also feeling the effects of the upheaval in their bottom line and in what some are calling overly restrictive reforms that were implemented before getting their input.

In response, LANL and its business managers held a "town hall" meeting Tuesday night in Santa Fe to open a new dialogue between LANL officials and the companies that help make the weapons lab run. …
