* Crews work around the clock as flames eat 300-plus acres

LA CUEVA -- Fire crews working through Sunday night managed to contain about 50 percent of the Virgin Mesa Fire near Jemez Springs as it is pushed northeast by prevailing winds towards the mountain town of La Cueva.

Even with crews working around the clock and support from air tankers dropping fire retardant from above, the fire, which is burning on the mesa top parallel to N.M. 4, has grown from about 100 acres to about 310 acres since Sunday evening.

But the fire has been advancing slowly and small, sparse flames lacked the strength to send a large plume of smoke skyward, as they did Sunday when streamers of smoke spread through the Rio Grande valley. …
