Crews Slowly Getting a Grip on the Virgin Mesa Fire.(West Side Journal)

LA CUEVA -- Fire crews working through the night managed to contain about 50 percent of the Virgin Mesa Fire near Jemez Springs as winds pushed it northeast toward the mountain town of La Cueva.

Even with crews working around the clock and support from air tankers dropping fire retardant, the fire, which is burning on the mesa top parallel to N.M. 4, has grown from about 100 acres to about 310 acres since Sunday evening.

But the fire has been advancing slowly, and small sparse flames lacked the strength to send a large plume of smoke skyward, as it did Sunday when streamers of smoke reached eastward across the Rio Grande into the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. …
