He Says Plant Aware of Emissions

A former Intel senior engineer joins an earlier whistleblower in alleging the microchipmaker has been aware of increased emissions of ammonia and other chemicals from the plant.

Chris Grotbeck says Intel management was aware of problems with an acid gas scrubber, used to clean pollutants from recycled water, at the Central Utilities Building and chose not to act. He also said Intel installed a system that could be used to inject mint or other fragrances into the plant's emission stream to mask chemical odors.

The state is investigating similar allegations of excess emissions from that scrubber, and of an attempt to cover them up, and will look into these new charges, Environmental Department spokesman Jon Goldstein said Monday. No findings have been reached in the investigation of earlier allegations by former Intel industrial hygienist George Evans, Goldstein said.

Evans came forward last month saying Intel would not let him pursue testing of emission plumes downwind of the plant near Rio Rancho and forced him to produce skewed air quality reports. …
