* Two separate programs help children learn without classes

A new breed of workers Monday took over Agua Fria Elementary School.

Nearly 150 Agua Fria kindergartners through sixth-graders showed up to work through play in the school's two separate summer programs. More children are scheduled to come.

Around Agua Fria's amphitheater, Los Amigos summer day campers, ages 5 to 7, choose among activities such as arts and crafts, wood working, sand and games.

Each week the students also will go swimming, hiking, fishing and on trips to the Santa Fe Children's Museum and other sites around the city.

"Play is the work of a kid," said Carmen Delgado, Agua Fria's counselor and the original grant writer for the 8-year-old Los Amigos program. …
