Virgin Mesa Fire About 50 Percent Contained

Fire crews working through the night managed to contain about 50 percent of the Virgin Mesa Fire near Jemez Springs as winds pushed it northeast toward the mountain town of La Cueva.

Even with crews working around the clock and support from air tankers dropping fire retardant from above, the fire, which is burning on the mesa top parallel to N.M. 4, has grown from about 100 acres to about 310 acres since Sunday evening.

Other hot spots

Fires burned elsewhere in northern New Mexico. Crews expected to have a line Monday evening around the Barro Fire, a 69-acre blaze burning in a remote area of the Santa Fe National Forest 12 miles southwest of Las Vegas, N.M., according to forest service spokeswoman Amanda Martinez.

The Monument Fire, a "sleeper" spotted late Sunday, burned 255 acres Monday on the private Fort Union Ranch, about eight miles northeast of Fort Union National Monument, according to John Harrison, a spokesman for the state Forestry Division at its Las Vegas District offices. …
