An estimated $10 million in security improvements at Kirtland Air Force Base's Underground Munitions Maintenance Storage Complex is welcome news in this era of worldwide terrorism.

When you live near a depot that holds one of the larger collection of nukes in the country, security is no small matter.

The complex, built southeast of an Albuquerque International Sunport runway in 1991 at a cost of $43 million, replaced Cold War bunkers dug into the Manzano Mountains in the 1950s.

In the wake of 9-11, creation of the Homeland Security Department and renewed hostilities in the Middle East, it makes sense to raise the bar on weapons security. …
