* Studying, dancing and reading helped get Ana Maria Martinez to opera stage

SANTA FE -- Lyric soprano Ana Maria Martinez came to singing by way of piano, drama, dance, musical theater ... and a book.

For Martinez, who sings the role of Fiordiligi in the Santa Fe Opera production of "Cosi fan tutte," the path to opera zigged and zagged.

Martinez, a Puerto Rico native, grew up in New York City, where she attended opera performances in which her mother, Evangelina Colon, sang.

After seeing her with Placido Domingo in "Carmen," Martinez tried to figure out "La Habanera," a famous aria from the opera, on the piano. Colon became excited that her daughter was interested in piano lessons. She also took up ballet and gymnastics. …
