Gov. Bill Richardson's diplomatic skills have made a big hit with Health Care Service Corp. of Chicago, the parent company of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of New Mexico.

Earlier this year, while the governor was in Chicago, he made a call on HCSC to say "thank you" for opening a multistate insurance claims processing center in Albuquerque.

The center opened last August with 120 new and 35 existing employees in a renovated HomeBase store on Alexander NE.

Richardson met with HCSC's Sherm Wolff, chief operating officer, and other company executives.

"After thanking us for sending jobs to New Mexico, the governor bluntly asked when more jobs would be forthcoming," recalls Bob Kieckhefer, HCSC vice president for public affairs.

"He talked to us for about a half-hour. He talked about economic development and the quality of the work force in New Mexico. …
