Participants in volleyball fund-raiser slosh around in mud to help Carrie Tingley Hospital Foundation

More than 10,000 people got down and dirty, or watched others do so, in the name of charity Saturday.

Participants in the ninth annual Mudd Volleyball Tournament played throughout the day in 80 mud pits and raised $200,000 to benefit the Carrie Tingley Hospital Foundation, said Geoff Rieder, president of the foundation's Board of Trustees. The foundation is designed to help special needs children with therapeutic and/or long term medical care.

About 480 teams spent the day in a foot of mud. Each team played five round-robin games, with winners advancing to the finals. …
