Tiny Santa Fe shares a problem with some of the world's greatest cities: what to do with monumental public art?

In New York, Paris or Rome, the answer as often as not has been to give splendid statues (or fountains or arches) their own plazas to command, or to let them soar above wide boulevards and huge traffic circles.

Alas, Santa Fe has only one Plaza, a modest affair unsuited to something the size, say, of the Trevi fountain. As for traffic circles, we can think of only the one on Camino de las Crucitas, too small to accommodate a centerpiece.

Luckily, most of our growing collection of memorials and commemorative statuary has remained comparably modest. …
