Court-Bound Inmates Will Wait in Cells

Albuquerque's old Downtown jail, vacated of inmates earlier this week, will be back in service soon.

Starting Monday, prisoners coming from the new jail west of Albuquerque will flow through the old jail's holding cells before going next door to Metropolitan Court.

Bernalillo County has agreed to lease the old jail to Houston-based Cornell Corrections, Inc., county officials said.

For the next couple of weeks, the old jail's holding cells will house inmates awaiting court appearances, said Jail Director Harry Tipton. After that, the northwest annex to the Downtown jail will be used to hold inmates for the next six to eight months. …
