Left Turn Fatal For Kids, Grandma

Six members of an extended family were only moments from their Navajo Reservation home Thursday afternoon when the young woman driving them in a new pickup, Cordell Jim, began to make the left turn into their driveway.

Police don't know whether she didn't see the semi-tractor trailer coming in the opposite direction on U.S. 491, formerly known as U.S. 666, or whether she thought she could safely make her turn in time.

Jim, 17, began to turn and semi driver Paul Grandin hit the brakes. He could not stop his truck in time.

In one of the worst crashes on a highway that has often seen terrible tragedy, five members of the Jim and Tapaha families were killed, Cordell Jim was critically injured and Grandin, although not physically injured, was traumatized by the damage his truck had done. …
