Some Say More Officers Needed

A sign of any quality jail is that criminals can't get out. However, the local correction's officer union president wants to know why at the area's new Metropolitan Detention Center guards can't get out either.

"There's a 10- to 45-minute wait to get through doors throughout the detention center," said Stephen Perkins, president of the Albuquerque Officer's Association. "It's slowing traffic to get from anywhere to anywhere, and it's unacceptable. If it stays as it is, it's not safe for anybody."

The 2,100-bed jail has replaced the old jail located Downtown and sits atop the West Mesa about 17 miles from Downtown Albuquerque. …
