First Albuquerque students in 20 years win the state 2003 Ford/AAA Student Auto Skills contest

It's a hot, lazy day and two Albuquerque teens are operating under the hood of a shiny new Ford Taurus.

A starter relay is missing. A cable has excessive resistance. A sensor and the injector are disconnected.

Within 30 minutes, the team has the car running again.

"It's a matter of being really good and really fast," said Career Enrichment Center instructor Mark Mulroy of recent graduates Thai Nguyen and Joshua Benavidez.

Nguyen and Benavidez placed first in the New Mexico 2003 Ford/AAA Student Auto Skills contest of high school students this spring, the first Albuquerque students to take the honor in 20 years, Mulroy said. …
