Teachers, District Agree on Pay Hike.(Journal North)

Six percent raises for teachers, 3 percent for hourly employees and early institution of a minimal teacher salary are highlights of a tentative salary agreement between the Santa Fe Public Schools and the teachers' union.

The agreement, announced by the school district Thursday, between SFPS and NEA Santa Fe would institute a $30,000 minimum teacher salary July 1 rather than in December, as mandated by the Legislature. The beginning salary at SFPS has been $26,414, NEA representative Duane Shields said.

Also, the school district would pay the 6 percent increase in all 26 pay periods, nine more than mandated by the state.

School board President Donita Sena, in a news release Thursday, stated a "sound budget" allowed the board to "go over and above the legislative mandate in compensating our employees. …
