Written Ruling Called 'Inaccurate'

Press freedom has been attacked by the state Attorney General's Office, a First Amendment lawyer says.

A court order that attempts to restrict use of news photos was signed by Santa Fe District Judge Michael Vigil on Thursday.

But that order, written by the Attorney General's Office, does not match a verbal ruling Vigil made on Wednesday, said Albuquerque lawyer Martin Esquivel, who often represents media organizations in First Amendment matters.

"He banned pictures and sketches in the courtroom only," Esquivel said.

At issue is whether newspapers can publish photos of certain witnesses in the Charles Maestas criminal case, even if those photos were obtained in public or elsewhere. …
