State to open fishing on Valles Caldera preserve.(Final)

SANTA FE -- The state Game Commission on Wednesday voted to open trout fishing on the Valles Caldera National Preserve.

The unanimous vote during the commission's monthly meeting -- this one inside the Roundhouse -- will open two stretches of trout-laden waters that haven't been fished in at least four years. The preserve hopes to start allowing anglers onto the 89,000-acre Jemez Mountains haven by the middle of next month.

Congress bought what was once known as the Baca Ranch to create the preserve in 2000. Like the hunters who once stood outside the locked gates and wondered what it would be like to stalk the large elk herds inside, fishermen also have yearned to cast their lines into the formerly private sections of San Antonio Creek and East Fork of the Jemez River. …
