Estancia Valley Basketball: Dead or Not Yet Born?(local)

In some places, boys basketball is a way of life. In the inner-city cement jungles of the big metropolitan areas, it's almost a religion. Basketball is big: 24-7 big.

But in the Estancia Valley, basketball is not only not thriving, it's barely surviving.

Moriarty High varsity boys basketball coach Randy Lykins tried for a month to put together a summer league for fifth- through eighth-grade boys. He finally scrapped the idea Saturday when a grand total of six boys had signed up for the league.

The situation is not much better in Estancia.

"If I have 20 guys show up for open gym, I'm lucky if four are high school basketball players," said Estancia varsity boys coach Richard Walker. …
