New Fee $100 Per Prairie Dog

One hundred dollars a head. That's what it will now cost to relocate prairie dogs into Torrance County.

The Torrance County Commission passed a resolution and the fee June 11 in response to concerns of area ranchers after dozens of prairie dogs were relocated from Albuquerque to a ranch near Corona.

Last fall Albuquerque Mayor Martin Chavez banned the poisoning of prairie dogs in city parks. The animals were creating a nuisance by digging holes at parks and golf courses, causing concern about children and adults who could step into a hole while running or playing.

In April the city relocated the prairie dogs to Heritage Ranch, a venture owned by rancher Jim Winder and his family. …
