Area Homeowners Face Waiting List

Homeowners in the East Mountains may have to wait awhile for financial assistance to thin trees on their properties.

The Ciudad Soil and Water Conservation District is out of money for its East Mountain Forest Health Program, according to Susan Rich, a natural resource specialist at the district.

The program is available to homeowners along both the North 14 and South 14 corridors for thinning projects around individual homes and subdivisions. The projects are intended to create "defensible space" that can save homes during a wildfire.

Dense forests combined with drought have created dangerous fire hazards, especially in areas where forest lands border residential areas, forest officials say. …
