Otero Outcry May Be Paying Off.(Mountain View)(Editorial)

Recent efforts by hikers, bikers, birders and others to retain access to Otero Canyon seem to be paying off.

To their credit, Kirtland Air Force Base officials have responded to users' outcry against fencing of the trail by scheduling a public hearing for 6:30 p.m. Monday at the Wyndham Hotel near the airport on Yale Boulevard in Albuquerque.

Thanks to intervention by Rep. Heather Wilson, R-N.M., who wrote the base commander questioning fencing of the East Mountain area, officials also agreed to extend the deadline for public comment by a month, to July 16.

It appears a compromise could be reached wherein the base could meet its security requirements while allowing the public to continue enjoying much of the popular recreation area. …
