Cement Plant Opens Doors for Public Tours.(Mountain View)

About a dozen people got a peek inside the state's only Portland cement factory Saturday when the GCC Rio Grande Portland Cement plant in Tijeras opened its doors for a tour.

Brian McGill, the plant's environmental manager, hosted the tour to answer questions from concerned citizens about the plant's operations.

Teachers and parents from nearby A. Montoya Elementary School and Roosevelt Middle School have complained for years about chronic upper respiratory illness, such as sinus infections, bronchitis, asthma and pneumonia, as well as skin rashes. They claim the illnesses have been caused by emissions from the nearby cement plant and possibly from nearby Interstate 40.

The cause of the illnesses has not been determined, and air quality studies are planned for the area. …
