Relatively speaking, Albuquerque's a commuter-friendly city. It's not an exhausting trip from one end to the other.

That's not to say that traveling from, say, the West Side to the Northeast Heights on a regular basis doesn't become somewhat tiresome.

As a soccer mom, Christine Lucero is all too familiar with the grind of carting her children back and forth from their Paradise Hills home to a field with a close-up view of the Sandia Mountains.

Recently, the 100-watt light bulb lit up brightly:

Home is where the start is.

The 37-year-old Lucero is in the midst of an ambitious undertaking: starting up a new American Youth Soccer Organization region for players who live on Albuquerque's West Side.

Until this year, if children ages 4-18 wanted to compete in AYSO, the only choice was Region 104, which includes almost all of Albuquerque. …
