Limits Apply In Courtroom Only

A state district judge has backed away from a ruling that attempted to limit the use of news photos taken outside his courtroom.

Judge Michael Vigil of Santa Fe on Wednesday said he went beyond what the state Attorney General asked for when he ruled earlier that newspapers could not publish pictures of alleged sex crime victims, no matter where the photos were taken.

"I ruled on things that I didn't need to rule on because it wasn't before me," Vigil said in an interview Wednesday.

The AG's office argues that newspapers should be barred from publishing pictures of four women who have testified against suspended Espanola Municipal Judge Charles Maestas in a pending criminal trial, even if those pictures were taken outside the courtroom or in a public place. …
