Keeping living conditions up to snuff for butterflies at the Rio Grande Botanic Garden exhibit requires attention to the smallest details

You will find monarch butterflies in the PNM Butterfly Pavilion at the Rio Grande Botanic Garden. You will find excited children, butterfly brochures in hand, identifying one after another of the bright, fluttering creatures.

But you won't find any milkweed.

The milkweed's absence is an example of the delicate balance curator Dale Belcher and the insect keepers must strike to maintain the popular Butterfly Pavilion.

From spring to fall, the screened-in pavilion is home to hundreds of butterflies at any given time, flitting among the flowers or feasting on sugar water or old fruit left out as treats for the delicate insects. …
