Another study, another list, New Mexico near the bottom again.

More than a quarter of our children live in poverty; 21 percent have no health insurance, compared with 12 percent nationally; 11 percent live in extreme poverty; 45 percent live in neighborhoods with a high poverty rate; 36 percent live in areas with high rates of high school dropouts.

One more list, one more whistling-past-the-graveyard joke about us and Louisiana, one more embarrassment we'd just as soon not think about too much as we turn the page or reach for the remote.

Some people think about it more than the rest of us, and more to the point, try to do something about it, even if the tide they've taken on is particularly relentless. …
