Victim of Mideast Violence Recovering

Former Albuquerque resident Brian Avery, 25, faces up to a year of reconstructive surgeries after being shot in the face April 5 in the West Bank town of Jenin. But he's not turning back in his peacekeeping efforts.

"I plan on doing stuff with the local community as it feels comfortable," said Avery, now recuperating at his parents' home in Chapel Hill, N.C. "I want to keep involved in the issue."

Avery, who had been working in Albuquerque as an apprentice gardener at Erda Gardens, a community-supported agriculture effort, left for the West Bank in mid-January. His trip was funded through the Arab-Jewish Peace Alliance here. …
