$10 Million Upgrade Protects Weapons Depot

One of the military's most sensitive bomb depots, at Kirtland Air Force Base, is slated to receive $10 million worth of security improvements.

The 12-year-old Kirtland Underground Munitions Maintenance and Storage Complex -- widely believed to be one of the Air Force's two primary nuclear weapon depots -- will get new fencing, perimeter lighting, an upgraded power system and a reinforced concrete crust.

Kirtland officials don't divulge the depot's contents or details of its security, but they acknowledged Tuesday that base leadership decided on some improvements following the 2001 terrorist attacks. …
