Free speech has collided with privacy for alleged sexual assault victims in a Santa Fe courtroom, a judge says.

State District Judge Michael Vigil has scheduled a hearing this morning on whether newspapers should be allowed to publish photographs of witnesses in a pending criminal trial, even if those photos were taken outside his courtroom.

Vigil ruled earlier this week on a motion filed by the state Attorney General's Office that seeks to prohibit news photos of women who've testified against suspended Espanola Municipal Judge Charles Maestas.

"I was granting the attorney general's request to prohibit the publication of pictures of alleged victims," Vigil said during a trial break Tuesday. …
