Managers To Weigh Design Changes

Jail managers will consider proposing design changes at the new jail -- such as putting in a "restraint pole" that suspects could be handcuffed to -- as part of an effort to alleviate the safety concerns of police officers, the jail's director said Monday.

Any design changes, however, would have to be discussed with Bernalillo County administrators, who oversaw construction of the 2,100-bed detention center. The city and county split the cost of operating the jail system, with the city managing daily operations.

Officers began booking suspects at the new Metropolitan Detention Center on Friday, but a leader of Albuquerque's police union said some police aren't happy with the arrangement. …
