Good leadership, often in short supply, is essential to public institutions and a blessing to one that touches as many lives so profoundly as the Catholic Church. The church is first and foremost a religious institution, and its leaders can (and do) exhibit the same human transgressions that visit any other institution.

But what they do matters, especially in New Mexico, where the history of this church has been intertwined with secular events for more than 400 years. Church leadership also matters by dint of sheer numbers: 17 percent of the state's population is made up of registered Catholics. A less official estimate might count as many as a quarter of New Mexicans. …
