Blood donor age lowered to 17

As of Friday, 17-year-olds will be able to donate blood without their parents' permission.

This counts as a triumph for Mirra Schwartz, 16, who had her first real lobbying experience when this proposed change was making its way through the Legislature this year.

"It was really fun. I really liked it," said Schwartz, who is going into her junior year at Albuquerque High School. "I learned a lot about government and the Legislature."

She said newspaper articles about blood shortages sparked her interest. She thought about how her junior-year friends would bemoan the fact that they forgot to bring signed permission slips from their parents on the days blood drives were scheduled at the school. …
