New Lockup Called A Threat to Officers

The Downtown jail, once so plagued by overcrowding it often exceeded a court-ordered population cap, now stands void of inmates.

On Saturday, authorities completed the transfer of 364 inmates from the Downtown jail, at Fifth and Roma NW, to the new Metropolitan Detention Center, located on the West Mesa, jail director Harry Tipton said Sunday.

But in a later interview Sunday, an Albuquerque police union official said some officers aren't happy with the new arrangement.

Union president Jeff Remington said the area of the jail where prisoners are booked is set up in such a way that city police officers sometimes have ended up with their backs to offenders. …
