Vets' Burial Law May Be Changed.(Final)

WASHINGTON -- Rep. Heather Wilson, R-N.M., is trying to change a little-known federal law that, under certain circumstances, prevents the spouses of veterans to be buried in a national cemetery with their deceased husband or wife.

Under existing law, if a veteran dies and his or her spouse remarries someone who isn't a military veteran, and if the nonveteran dies or they are divorced, the spouse can then be eligible for burial in a national cemetery. Similarly, if a veteran's spouse dies and he or she remarries, both spouses are eligible for burial in a national cemetery, Wilson said.

But if a veteran dies and the spouse remarries a nonveteran, the spouse can't be buried with his or her first spouse in a national cemetery. …
