I was disappointed when I first saw Jacob Tarazon Matteson's landscape etching show at New Grounds Print Workshop.

The quality and effort were there but I was expecting examples of his signature surrealist collection. Instead I was viewing a fairly straightforward group of conventional landscapes. After some reflection I decided to go back and take another look at his new work, which does include some surrealist touches.

Matteson recently retired as a high school art teacher and had been producing a series of prints with spooky themes like empty boats sailing through dimly lit gateways and other intimate, psychologically charged scenes. …
