When Leonard Bernstein's musical "West Side Story" premiered on Broadway in 1957 he was already the most famous conductor in the world, leading the New York Philharmonic, and an exponent of a wide range of classical and popular music.

His "West Side Story" virtually electrified Broadway and launched him into superstar status. The music was complex and provocative, depicting the destructive forces of racism, the tragedy of gang violence and the agonized fate of start-crossed lovers.

At 8 p.m. Saturday, June 21, the El Paso Symphony Orchestra performs pieces from the musical under the direction of Guyer Aykal at the Spencer Theater near Ruidoso. …
