Although his career spanned five decades, and his films numbered nearly 400, the average filmgoer has probably never seen a piece by the late experimental filmmaker Stan Brakhage.

Brakhage pioneered the kind of personal, poetic, cinematic statements that would never grace a multiplex.

Yet, his influence can be seen everywhere, said fellow experimental filmmaker Willie Varela.

"The experimental film has been absorbed into so many areas of moving image making that people don't even know where it came from or even know the real, unadulterated, undiluted sources," said Varela, who will be in Albuquerque this weekend to present a program of his own work, and a tribute to Brakhage, who died earlier this year. …
