Gritty local film tells Wild West story on a shoestring.(Final)

With the New Mexico film industry seemingly on the rebound, no one really likes to think of the lean years.

But there's at least one celluloid reminder from that time -- a dark western roped together on a small budget and the true grit of local talent and crew.

The film, "Mean as Hell," debuts Thursday at Madstone Theaters.

The year was 2001. Although the state had passed a film investment bill, guidelines were still being drawn up. Even work on commercials had dried up, said one of the film's executive producers, Dennis Garber, who had been in the industry since 1989. It was the worst slump he could recall. …
