Founders believe African-American celebration deserves to be part of community

Joe Powdrell made himself a promise when he was a U.S. soldier fighting in Vietnam. "I told myself that if I came back home alive I was going to celebrate my culture and embrace it," he said. "I learned as much as I could and I vowed to celebrate Juneteenth wherever I was."

Powdrell has kept his promise for 32 years in Albuquerque, including Saturday's Juneteenth celebration, "Freedom Revisited," held at Dennis Chavez Community Center and Park. The holiday commemorates the day the last group of slaves in America learned of their freedom in Galveston, Texas, on June 19, 1865. …
