Translation of 1,000-year-old medicinal text catching attention of modern-day scientific community

Anne Van Arsdall spent her high school years in Paris, absorbing French literature from the Middle Ages and finding herself inexplicably drawn to medieval cathedrals where the Mass was still recited in Latin.

"I was 16 and in Paris," she says. "At that time, the Middle Ages seemed romantic -- King Arthur and the Round Table, cathedrals and stained glass. And in Europe, you could see all this. Medieval towns were easy to visit."

By graduate school, Van Arsdall was in Germany, studying Germanic languages and Old English to add to her French and Latin skills.

Fast forward a few decades to New Mexico, where Van Arsdall has found a way to combine her fascination with the Middle Ages, her linguistic and writing skills and an interest in herbs. …
