Trips that offer hiking, biking, snorkeling and more are on the rise

For a growing number of older adults, vacations aren't about lying around doing nothing. They are a chance to pursue a love of hiking or to learn a new sport such as scuba diving.

"Just because you are 60, 70 or 80 doesn't mean you have to stop being active," says Cady Goldfield, a spokeswoman for Elderhostel.

Elderhostel is one of a number of organizations marketing active group trips to those age 55 and older. Elderhostel offers a variety of such trips in its "Active Outdoor" selections, which include hiking, biking, rafting, backpacking, golfing, horseback riding and sailing.

Goldfield says trips that include physical activity have always been popular and about two-thirds of the group's offerings have some active component. …
