High Court Won't Take Up Appeal

SANTA FE -- The state Supreme Court has refused to act on a case involving a sex offender who asked to be exempted from New Mexico's public offender registry.

By denying a request to consider the matter, the high court lets stand a ruling last year by the Court of Appeals that the offender must register.

Zane Brothers, who in 1996 pleaded guilty to two counts of criminal sexual contact of a minor, requested an exemption from the state law mandating that people who are convicted of sex crimes register.

Brothers' attorney David Henderson said his client's sentence was deferred, and he argued that the charges were dismissed and that Brothers is not convicted. …
