"The problem is that bighorn sheep herds that stay at carrying capacity ... get more susceptible to a disease outbreak." Good food. Great views. But too many sheepish neighbors.

Two northern New Mexico wilderness areas are likely at or near their carrying capacity for bighorn sheep, the state Game and Fish Department said this week. And the department is now hoping to move more than 10 percent of those herds to other areas.

Game and Fish plans to capture up to 70 of the 500-plus Rocky Mountain bighorns in the Pecos Wilderness north of Santa Fe and the Wheeler Peak area northeast of Taos, sheep biologist Elise Goldstein said. …
