The year was 1942, and some people had reservations about opening a facility as frivolous as a golf course during the early stages of America's involvement in World War II.

But on the day the U.S. scored a decisive victory over the Japanese at Midway Island in June 1942, the University of New Mexico Public Golf Course was opened.

At that time, the course had 18 holes, a six-hole pitch-and-putt course and a driving range and stretched from Central Avenue to Indian School Road.

It now is a nine-hole course known as UNM North, but it's only a shell of what it once was.

Sandra Ashley, who carries the title of customer services director at the course, has come up with a history. …
