Q: I have a west-facing patio with shade cloth on top and lattice on the sides. Several years ago I planted English ivy and Virginia creeper on the lattice. The ivy is doing fine but the Virginia creeper has some bare stems with foliage at the ends. Is there a way to get the creeper to grow again in those places or should I start a different plant and phase out the creeper? Will I eventually have the same problem with the ivy? -- Carol Langer, Albuquerque
